{"id":500,"date":"2024-08-26T19:49:40","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T19:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.empressofasia.com\/?page_id=500"},"modified":"2024-08-26T19:49:40","modified_gmt":"2024-08-26T19:49:40","slug":"engine-room","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.empressofasia.com\/index.php\/engine-room\/","title":{"rendered":"Engine Room"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The EMPRESS OF ASIA was steam powered.\u00a0\u00a0The steam was produced in 10 cylindrical Scotch boilers.\u00a0\u00a0Each boiler was filled with water that was heated by furnaces that passed fire through tubes that ran through the boiler.\u00a0\u00a0When the hot gases had been expended the exhaust was vented through the ship&#8217;s three stacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Six of the boilers were double ended and four were single ended.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each end contained three furnaces, giving the ship a total of sixty-four furnaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EMPRESS OF ASIA was coal fired.\u00a0\u00a0Trimmers delivered coal through chutes and wheelbarrows to firemen who cared for the furnaces.\u00a0\u00a0It was the firemen&#8217;s responsibility to maintain the fires in the furnaces.\u00a0\u00a0A slice bar was used to turn the coal to ensure a thorough burn.\u00a0\u00a0Ash needed to be removed from the fires regularly. The boilers produced a pressure of 190 psi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The boilers were capable of consuming 300 tons of coal a day.&nbsp;A typical round trip to the Orient would take approximately 6 weeks and would consume over 10,000 tons of coal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The engines consisted of four Parsons turbines; a type designed by the British engineer Charles Parsons.
