Douglas Richard Elworthy, who was a Vancouver, British Columbia resident, signed on the EMPRESS OF ASIA on January 22, 1941at Vancouver as a member of the Catering Department. He had previously served on the ALBERTOLITE, an oil tanker owned by Imperial Oil that sailed between San Pedro, California and Ioco, British Columbia.
Douglas Elworthy died from injuries sustained during the bombing of the EMPRESS OF ASIA near Singapore on February 5, 1941 and is buried at Kranji War Cemetery in Singapore. He was 23 years old.
